The road deck of an old bridge was in a poor condition and in need of replacement and the client required geotechnical information to assist with the design calculations.  In the first instance Frederick Sherrell Limited carried out a desk study and walkover inspection to check the likely ground conditions.  Old borehole logs and historical photographs were particularly useful and helped to target the subsequent ground investigation.

The ground investigation was carried out in 2022 by local site investigation contractors (South West Geotechnical Limited) and included horizontal coring through the bridge abutments, hand dug pits to check the foundations, trenching in the road (top of the bridge) and boreholes to establish the ground condition in depth.  The boreholes and trial pits were logged by an engineering geologist from Frederick Sherrell Limited.  The results were used to prepare a geotechnical report.
